Baltimore's Key Bridge: Insurance Impact

On March 26, 2024, a container ship struck the Key Bridge in Baltimore, MD, which collapsed into the Patapsco River, killing six workers. Considering the tragic loss of life, along with the bridge’s role as a major thoroughfare and the impact on the port of Baltimore, the losses are significant. Recovery will be time-consuming and costly, with many parties involved. In this webinar, editors Karen Sorrell, CPCU and Christine Barlow, CPCU from FC&S Expert Coverage Interpretation will discuss the insurance implications of the bridge collapse and the suspension of the port. Steven Weiss, chief underwriting officer at Incarnation, LLC, will discuss the marine aspects and ramifications for the industry.

With over forty years of experience in commercial and specialty lines underwriting and product management, Karen brings a wealth of expertise to her role. She spent much of her career at Great American Insurance before working with other prominent insurers like Argo Group, Trident Insurance Public Risk, HCC Public Risk, and GuideOne. Karen's skills in technical underwriting, research, analysis, and insurance product development make her a valuable resource in property and casualty insurance, particularly in policy language interpretation. Her broad commercial insurance experience covers underwriting, coverage analysis, product development, regulatory compliance, policy writing, large account management, and inland marine underwriting. Karen has authored or edited publications on business auto, commercial property, general liability, and home healthcare for the National Underwriter Company. Steven Paul Weiss, MS-Ins, CPCU, AMIM, NAMS-CMS, brings over 35 years of expertise in ocean and inland marine insurance, spanning roles such as marine surveyor, loss adjuster, direct insurance and reinsurance underwriter, alongside eight years of service in the U.S. Navy. As senior VP/chief underwriting officer at Munich Re Specialty Group Insurance Services, he managed a team overseeing $140 million in direct premium with loss ratios below 40%. Steven's current focus lies in establishing an ocean and inland marine delegated underwriting authority, specializing in cargo, project cargo, transportation, and related lines. With a commitment to risk mitigation and value optimization, he collaborates closely with underwriters, brokers, and assureds. Steven's global experience includes establishing offices in Latin America and serving insureds across six continents. Outside of work, he cherishes family time, indulges in gardening and sporting clays, and actively participates in industry conferences and mentoring programs. A dedicated learner, Steven holds a BA in history from Virginia Military Institute, an MS in insurance management from Boston University, and certifications from the American Institute for CPCU. He serves as an international regional vice president at the National Association of Marine Surveyors and was recognized as the "Risk Management Professional of the Year" by St. Mary’s Greehey School of Business in March 2023.
